2005 York Olive Festival Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards

The second York Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards Competition was organised as a joint initiative between the York Visitor Centre and the York & Districts Olive Association. This was the first show of the Australian 2005 harvest season and only oils produced in Western Australia were eligible to enter. The early timing of the show was to allow local producers the opportunity to have their oils judged and ranked against their peers prior to the main, national oil shows of the year. It also allowed the oils, particularly the delicate ones, to be exhibited at their freshest and best. The oils were categorised by style (delicate, medium or robust) rather than volume of production so that smaller producers could see how their oils compared to those from the larger scale producers.

The 2005 olive harvest and processing season in Western Australia was unusually late, with processing continuing into the beginning of August. Nevertheless, fifty three oils were entered into this year’s competition, which was an increase of 26% on last year (2004: forty two entries). Judging was carried out in Perth by a panel of nine judges and was administered by Ian Rowe of the WAOC using standard practices. The Chairman of Judges was Margaret Kirkby who came from Moree, NSW to ensure impartiality.

Of the fifty three entries, twenty eight were awarded medals; one Gold, ten Silver and seventeen Bronze.
