The 2006 York Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition is intended to highlight the best extra virgin olive oils from around Australia by publicising the efforts of producers striving for excellence in the production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It also provides an opportunity for growers to benchmark their oils against other producers.

The Chief Judge will be Margaret Kirkby, one of Australia’s most experienced olive oil tasters, and a foundation member of the Australian Olive Association’s internationally accredited Olive Oil Tasting Panel. Margaret will be assisted by judges from the West Australian Olive Council’s experienced tasting group that judge the Perth Royal Show Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition.

The competition is open to all Extra Virgin Olive Oils made from fruit grown only in Australia. The rule limiting entries to Western Australian oils no longer applies.

The oils will be divided into one of three styles for judging;

    1. Delicate: The oil should display aromas and flavours that are fresh and distinct. It should have zero to slight bitterness and pungency.

    2. Mild: The oil should display aromas and flavours that are fresh, distinct and of moderate intensity. It should have a moderate degree of bitterness and pungency which is balanced with the fruit flavour intensity.

    3. Robust: The oil should display aromas and flavours that are intense, fresh and complex. It should have a high and distinct bitterness and pungency that is balanced by the fruit intensity.

The oils will be grouped into their style and judged using the Australian Olive Association’s 20 point judging system by a panel of 2-3 judges under Margi Kirkby’s supervision. Oils scoring 17.0 points or above will receive a gold award, those scoring between 15.0 and below 17.0 points a silver award, and those scoring between 13.0 and below 15.0 points a bronze award.

There will be an additional prize for the best oil produced by an owner or grower in the Swan Avon Region. This prize is sponsored by the Swan Avon Olive Association.

All reasonable steps will be taken to ensure the judging panels are unaware of the producer or growing area of the oils before and during judging ie judging is to be impartial and fair. Even though each entry has its own four character code supplied by the entrant, the Steward will apply another code to the oil for identification purposes during the judging process. If the judge has an entry in the competition, that person will be placed on a different judging panel whenever possible. The judges will not see the entry bottle as each oil is placed into a “standard” 500ml bottle prior to judging.

Entries for the Competition must be received no later than 12 noon Saturday 10th June 2006 for not more than three types of oil per producer.

The announcement of the awards will be made at the Awards Dinner of the York Olive Festival to be held on Friday 23 June 2006.
